Phantom Blade Zero's Boss Rewards Can Open the Way Back

An October 28 PlayStation preview explains how boss weapons feed into combat and exploration in S-Game's action RPG, due on PS5 the following day.

Hua's flowers are bad news when you're fighting her. After that fight, they can be your problem to give somebody else. Her Scarlet Wraithblade is one of the examples in PlayStation's new Phantom Blade Zero preview: complete combos with it and flowers appear, slowing enemies around them.

Most weapons, the preview says, are taken from beaten bosses. There is an appealing bit of familiarity in that arrangement. You've spent a fight watching the thing, trying to stay out of its way. Getting to use it afterwards sounds like a good excuse to remember what made it awkward to face.

The weapon change has a practical job too. Blocking reduces Sha-Chi. Swapping between your two main weapons replenishes it, so staying with a favourite weapon isn't necessarily the safest answer to every exchange.

We'd be interested to see how long players stick with a comfortable pair. Learning two weapons well could be satisfying; getting a strange new boss reward could be the thing that finally persuades you to break the habit. That's a possibility the system suggests, rather than a conclusion from our own playthrough.

Some Phantom Edge weapons also break barriers or give access to distant locations. A fight can therefore leave you with unfinished business in a place you've already visited. Keep that odd obstruction in mind when a new reward turns up.

The PS5 release date given in the preview is October 29. For anyone watching the launch coverage, those rewards are a useful detail to follow. After the boss has gone, there may be something more interesting to do than inspect the damage on a new sword.
