Before buying another trip into the Metro, check the games you already own. Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux both received a free Xbox Series X|S update on October 29. There is work on the textures, lighting and shadows, as well as support for the Xbox controller's Impulse Triggers.
The figures in 4A Games' announcement are native 4K at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps. We haven't run a performance test. Anyone comparing them should also check their screen's refresh-rate support: the setting in the game is only one part of that arrangement.
A return visit with a purpose
The studio says its changes were made to “authentically preserve the look and feel” of the originals. We'd be quite happy to spend the first few minutes checking that, without trying to advance the story.
Pick a room you remember. Look across it, walk towards a doorway, then turn back. Repeat that little route in the other display mode. Take your time with the comparison; changing several other options at once can make it hard to work out which change you prefer.
We'd be looking for the small things a screenshot leaves out. Does looking around feel comfortable? Can you still lose a moment wondering what's waiting in the dark? More detailed textures are a welcome addition, but that second question is a large part of why we'd return to Metro.
The update is available now for both Redux games on Xbox Series X|S. Existing owners don't have to choose a new purchase before finding out what the refresh does for a campaign they know.
