A free RPG trial always leaves us with the same dilemma. Rush through the opening to see a little more combat, or take our time and see whether the world draws us in? For Stories, we'd slow down. You won't get through a long adventure in three hours anyway.
Capcom announced the event on October 7. Monster Hunter Stories and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin are available for three-hour timed trials from October 22 through October 25. No Xbox Game Pass membership is needed. The word to watch is timed: this isn't an unlimited weekend with the complete games.
Pick one and give it some time
Stories is the branch of Monster Hunter where you raise monsters as a Rider and take turns in battle. If the action games have never suited you, that change may be a reason to have a look. There's more time to consider an action before committing to it.
Our suggestion is to choose an entry before settling in. It's easy to spend half an evening downloading, comparing editions and reading about what you should play, then have very little energy left to play anything. Let the trial answer a modest question instead: would you come back to this tomorrow?
The characters and monster raising deserve a chance too. A trial can leave you wanting to see what happens next even if you haven't reached a particularly demanding fight. That counts for something in a game you might spend many evenings with.
Stories 3 has a different date to remember
The same Capcom announcement gives November 18 for Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection on Xbox on PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. That lets owners of the supported digital Xbox version continue on Windows, carrying progress and other supported content across.
It isn't a new date for every PC store, and it isn't a promise about PlayStation saves. We're being specific because those distinctions matter when someone is deciding whether to buy another copy.
Stories 3 already offers its own trial on Xbox Series X|S, and progress from that trial can transfer into the full game. Don't confuse it with this weekend's limited playtime for the first two entries.
So which download do you want?
Look at the full title before starting. Pick one of the earlier Stories games for the October 22–25 event, or look for Stories 3's separate trial if that is the adventure that interests you. Check the trial terms on the store screen as well; three hours can go quickly.
There's no need to treat this like homework for the whole series. Try a game, see whether its pace fits your evening, and leave the next purchase until you actually want to return.
